Knock-On-Wood SawWorks is a small, diversified company specializing in cabin and outbuilding construction from our own locally, sustainably sourced materials. We provide design-build services for custom cabins, barns, porches, and outbuildings of all kinds, as well as custom portable sawmilling services, lumber sales, and small-scale logging.
Knock-on-Wood SawWorks strives to offer building, sawmilling, and logging services with respect for the life of each tree. We build environmentally friendly buildings and cabins sourced from local woods; sawmilling and lumber sales with a focus on quality rough-cut wood; and logging that is environmentally sound while maximizing respect for the trees being harvested.
We are based in Topsham, Vermont, and work in and around the Upper Valley, the Mad River Valley, and the Northeast Kingdom, with some ability to work remotely for large projects.

Over the past 20+ years I have been building my skills in the process of turning local wood into local products. My work is rooted in a deep appreciation and understanding of the complex web of interconnections within the forested landscape. I started with a foundation in carpentry, began to learn timber framing, bought a sawmill, and started making my own wood products and buildings. Forestry and small-scale logging skills have grown with my business. I teach classes in small-scale sustainable logging and milling for multiple organizations. I live on 43 acres of productive woods in Topsham, Vermont with my wife and two kids.
Locally Grown Buildings
We design and build simple, solid buildings made from materials sourced on-site or provided by us from local sources. We specialize in outbuildings of all kinds, including barns, cabins, pole barns, and sheds, as well as porches and saunas. We also lead or assist with timber frame raisings.
Your trees or ours? We operate our own sustainably managed woodlot, and can also use trees you have on-site and turn them into quality outbuildings or building materials with the utmost respect for the health of the forest ecosystem.
Custom Sawmilling, Logging, and Lumber Sales
Custom, Portable Sawmilling
We focus on high-quality boards and beams and maximum utilization. We are especially adept at cutting usable lumber from marginal-quality logs. We’ll come to you: the sawmilling operation is 100% portable.
Lumber Sales
We have small amounts of lumber available, both hardwood and softwood, and can often fill custom orders. Specializing in Hemlock and Pine.
Small Scale Logging
We log with attention to the impact on the environment and respect for the trees. Accurate felling and minimal disturbance are our trademarks. Our equipment varies from simple hand tools to power winches, to a small 30hp tractor with a winch depending on the application. Logging jobs are usually done in connection with a building project or for a lot. Both yard and remote work are possibilities.
